Throwback Artist Bio: Travis Trent D’Arby
Travis Trent D’Arby is one of the biggest voices ever to hit the new wave stage. Since 1984 this beautiful vocalist has been blowing down the mother-forking world with his gifts of vocal sorcery. Born in New York, Trent had a vocal range and vibe that was almost surreal. At the time, nobody blended pop and soul music together as deliciously as he could. Trent grew up in the church as the son of a gospel singer who taught him how to develop his vocals. In the 80’s Trent’s Fame skyrocketed with the singles Wishing Well and Sign My Name.
The ’80s and ’90s were very good for Trent’s career and maintained quite a high level of fame and pop relevance for over a decade. Travis Trent D’Arby put out four albums, Introducing The Hardline, Neither Fish nor Flesh, Symphony or Damn, and Vibrator before the whole y2k disaster struck.
Sananda Maitreya
In 2001, Trent officially changed his name to Sananda Maitreya, the artist explains that it has no particular religious significance, in Sanskrit; sānanda means “possessed of happiness”, while maitreya means “friendly, kind, loving, benevolent”. The artist refers to a series of dreams that awakened him, enlightened him to knowing his “true name”. As Sananda Maitreya, this talented dwarf star put out a collection of albums, Angels and Vampires Volume I and II, Nigor Mortis, The Sphinx, Return to Zooathalon, Rise of the Zoogebrian Time Lords, and Prometheus and Pandora.
Sananda Maitreya is a once in a generation artist that has a lot to give to the world and he’s doing just that. You can see Sananda currently delivering his greatest hits while always peppering you with new music. The sheer number of albums he has been able to produce is a testament to his spiritual growth. The world may have stopped listening to Sananda in great numbers but his true fans have plenty to look forward to.
