Throwback Artist Bio: Dee-Lite
Dee-Lite was once a world-wide force to be reckoned with in the heavily saturated dance music scene of the 90s. In 1990 their first album World Clique shot to the top of the dance charts. That same year the song “Groove Is in the Heart” became their first number one hit single.
The song features vocals from Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest. It includes the famous bass guitar loop sampled from the Herbie Hancock song “Bring Down The Birds”. To top it off funk musician Bootsy Collins provided additional vocals because he was such a fan of the group.
A politically-charged second album was released following their success, entitled Infinity Within in 1992. The album failed to chart as high as their debut, but they still scored two Top 40 dance hits with “Runaway” and “Pussycat Meow”.
Irreconcilable Differences
DJ Towa had a slightly different vibe than the rest of the group. The introverted DJ did not enjoy being on tour. He wasn’t jazzed about performing the same songs every night to different crowds, which was crucial to the group staying relevant. Towa preferred working on tracks for the group’s third album at home in the studio, which garnished Dewdrops in the Garden in 1994. Unfortunately, that album would lead to the disbanding of the group, its lack of critical success would be the nail in the coffin of the group’s creative differences.
To our dismay the group has no intention of getting back together any time soon. Dee-Lite went up and dazzled the sky like a firework show. Those that were lucky enough to witness the event will not soon forget just how good that groove really was.
