Throwback Artist Bio: Eurythmics
Many people know Eurythmics songs and can easily recognize their music but know very little about the band itself. The Eurythmics is actually a duo consisting of members Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart. The duo released their first studio album, In the Garden, in 1981 and did not exactly set the world on fire.
However, the pair would go on to achieve global success when their second album Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) which was released in 1983. The title track became a worldwide hit that topped the charts in various countries, including the US. The sounds that Stewart was able to create were absolutely hypnotizing, and with Lennox belting out lyrics perfectly to match, the duo was a music lover’s dream.
The band had a sound so appealing that it was difficult to evolve under the watchful eyes of the world after their debut. Over the next decade, the two would work on individual projects as both of them were highly regarded by other artists in the genre. Several of the solo projects were very good but did not quite set the spark like the two songs we all know and love them for.
In our opinion the entire catalog is fire. These artists are new-wave, meaning that they were something different, a break from the commercial tapping of pop music. Sometimes when a group like this has an appeal to the world it is almost by accident – I’m sure these two weren’t thinking: ok, let’s make a worldwide sensation with these songs.
They just made songs they love, songs that were different. The success of those songs suggested that they just keep cranking out smashes after smashes but that’s not who they are. They kept evolving and developing long before and after the critical acclaim.
The pair have announced on their website a documentary illustrating the history of the band is in production and will be released soon. It will be a great treat for music fans to get a glimpse into the world of these artists as they tell the story of their own careers, we will be longingly looking forward to its release.
