Must-Have Album Review: The Ballad of Dood & Juanita By Sturgill Simpson

Sturgill Simpson

We rarely review country albums but when it comes to Sturgill Simpson we will gladly make an exception. The seventh album by the Kentucky native is actually a more traditional country album than anyone hears nowadays. Simpson describes the piece as “traditional country, bluegrass and mountain music, including gospel and a cappella.”

We describe it as a mountain jewel, shooting from a blue-grassy noel, splitting the finest hairs off frog’s asses everywhere. A sharp-shooting collection of complex yet simple melodies and concoctions from the still of hard living.

Simpson gained global attention with his 2019 project Sound & Fury that included an anime film to accompany it on Netflix. Sturgill is back to the bare bones of the country music he was raised on. Willie Nelson even joins in to collaborate on the track “Juanita”. This album is a must-have for all the right reasons, downright authenticity being one of them. It’s not clear if we will see any videos from the project; so far we just have the official audio.

Check out our favorite songs from the album below.
