Borderland 2026: Big Guitars, Deep Soul and Room for Discovery

Some festival posters make their pitch in the largest possible letters. Borderland certainly has those: Jack White, Alabama Shakes and Lord Huron are on its September 18–20 lineup at Knox Farm State Park in East Aurora, New York. Here at the Box, we want more from a weekend than a photograph proving we stood somewhere near a famous person. We want a new song following us home. We want the unexpected set that turns a casual introduction into a small obsession.

Our Borderland watchlist includes flipturn, Penelope Road and St. Paul & the Broken Bones, alongside regional names such as Organ Fairchild and VØYAGR. The latter won the festival’s Battle of the Borderland competition. That local connection is worth making space for, rather than treating the early part of the bill as a waiting room. Our suggestion is simple: choose one artist you already love and one you know almost nothing about. Give both a proper place in the day. Familiar music brings its own history with it; unfamiliar music gets the chance to make some. That balance is where a festival becomes more than a very expensive playlist.

Look around between sets

Borderland’s appeal is not limited to its three stages. The festival describes a Hallwalls-curated Art Garage and an Artisan Alley featuring local makers. We like the idea of letting those spaces interrupt the musical itinerary. Find something made by hand. Spend a moment with an artwork you did not expect to encounter. Then return to the next set with your eyes and ears a little more awake. There should be room for curiosity between the choruses.

Plan the practical parts separately

At our September 14 check, Borderland’s ticket page still offered weekend general admission and date-specific single-day general admission options.
