A SMALL DISPATCH FROM THE PRESENT
Today’s chapter in culture.
A date opens its year. Verified day matches get a special label; nearby discoveries always show their own dates.
YOUR ARRIVAL / JUNE 25, 1984
Welcome to 1984.
EXPANDED EDITION / More ’70s, ’80s & ’90s discoveries. Look for the Apple Music preview buttons.
How this little time machine works
This first edition contains 42 selected discoveries, dated 1885–2023. It is a small editorial archive with gaps, not a complete chart, world history or account of every scene. Enter any past date from 1850 onward; some stops will have no entries yet.
“The era” means the selected year plus or minus five years. “Only that year” includes dated seasons and ranges that overlap the year. An exact day label appears only when the source gives that day. Creation, release, collection season and public unveiling are different events, identified on each card. A work from later in the selected year is labeled accordingly when its exact date is known.
Dates and facts were checked against the linked artist, label and museum records on October 28, 2026. Short descriptions and looking/listening prompts are Bubbling Box editorial suggestions. These selections are not claims that one work caused another.
Nine albums have optional Apple Music players. The player loads only when you choose a preview, with Apple’s own artwork and controls. Apple supplies the audio; availability and preview length depend on the recording, region and account state. Original-release history stays separate from current remaster editions. The radio pauses before the player loads; changing the date, filtering, closing the player or returning to radio stops it.
Photo stories beside your discoveries match an image year, a dated chapter in the story, or the artist behind a matching work. The connection is labeled on each card. “Only that year” refers to these dated connections; a related portrait may come from another year, shown separately. Stories with more than one subject appear once in All discoveries and can also be found in the relevant individual section.
Seventeen locally displayed images include public-domain museum images and licensed archive, performance and vinyl photographs. Each photograph has a credit and, where applicable, a source and license link. Later photographs are explicitly dated so they cannot be mistaken for images from the original release or collection year. Other works remain viewable at their original archives.
THE RECORD SHELF / LOOK BEFORE YOU LISTEN
The sleeve is
part of the story.
Artwork, typography, a face you never forget. Take a closer look at a record, then follow it into the music. These selections range across the archive.

THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE YEARS
A face. A gesture.
A life behind the work.
Before the familiar sound or signature style came lessons, day jobs, experiments and first chances. Meet the people behind the work—from a young Stevie Wonder to Mary Quant making clothes for her first shop. Read a little here, then open an image for the fuller story and archive credits.
Browse all eleven stories here, or find connected stories beside your dated discoveries above. Swipe, scroll or use the arrows. Each image keeps its own date.
