Indie Discoveries: Leave a Little Room for the Unexpected
The best thing about an unfamiliar name is that it has not asked you to have an opinion yet. You get to arrive curious.
Our Indie Discoveries playlist gives that curiosity somewhere to go. Alex Burey’s “Chocolate” opens the current sequence, followed by Little Simz’s “Lotus,” RÓIS’s “OH LOVELY APPEARANCE OF DEATH” and Surprise Chef’s “Tag Dag.” That is already a rather different invitation from putting one narrow genre on repeat.
Further along, the list brings together Durand Jones & The Indications’ “Flower Moon,” Hermanos Gutiérrez’s “Sonido Cósmico” and Barry Can’t Swim’s “Still Riding.” Then the names get smaller again: Dat Kid Deuce, Riff Wood, Freddy Zucchet and Ghost in the Willow all have a place. Familiar artists can open the door without taking up the entire room.
Take the scenic route
Try the first few selections in order, then follow the name you do not recognize. Open that artist’s channel. Check the credits. Find another song. A playlist becomes useful when it sends you somewhere beyond itself.
Here, “indie” describes our discovery-minded approach rather than a claim that every recording has the same label arrangement or musical style. The current list contains 30 videos, and a name being new to you does not mean the artist just started yesterday.
Bring one discovery back to the comments. Which artist deserves a closer look from the Box, and what should we hear next? Leah and I read and respond. The fun is in finding out where somebody else’s curiosity went.
