Bubbling Up: Your Next Favorite Might Already Be in Here
Every favorite artist was once a name you had not clicked yet. This is a good place to do some clicking.
Bubbling Up brings together artists we want readers to explore, from Oklou’s “choke enough” and The Linda Lindas’ “Burning Out” to Coach Party’s “Disco Dream (Live from Club Caramel)” and Rose Gray’s “Louder, Please.” The current list has 50 videos; it gives the discovery a little room to unfold.
Look beyond the opening names and you will find Eva Cassel, Genevieve Stokes, Chinese American Bear, Wons Phreely, Frank Joshua, Brian Lambert, Art Block and HEALER among the selections. An audience does not have to be enormous before an artist deserves somebody’s attention.
Emerging is an invitation, not a birth certificate
The playlist’s name points toward discovery. It does not mean that every person in it is a debut artist, that every upload is newly released or that every selection is obscure. DEVO’s “Gates of Steel” is in the current sequence too: an established touchstone taking a turn among newer discoveries. We would rather explain that than pretend the whole list was made yesterday.
Use the playlist as a route into artists’ own channels and catalogues. Read who made the recording. Notice the song that interrupts your scrolling. Then give that artist another few minutes.
