From the Inbox: Riff Wood Find a Glimpse of Sun Beyond a Tree

Some young bands are still discovering how to stand in the same room together. Riff Wood already have years of shared history beneath their feet. The Utah trio of Carson Groves, Hyrum Russon and Shredder began playing together at age 11, won Utah’s Battle of the Bands as ninth-graders and have been building outward ever since.

Now the longtime friends are approaching another milestone. “Beyond A Tree” is the final preview of their sophomore album, Butterfly In Black And White, due September 18, 2026 through Giant Music. The album was recorded with producer Rob Cavallo, whose résumé includes work with Green Day, My Chemical Romance and Paramore.

The heart of “Beyond A Tree” is hope arriving through a crack in the clouds. In the story supplied with the release, Russon describes searching for a glimpse of sunlight while caught inside sadness—and wondering whether life might offer another chance. It is an emotionally direct idea with plenty of room for listeners to place their own bruises, questions and fresh starts.

The momentum around Riff Wood is growing too. Supplied press materials report millions of streams across earlier songs “I Won’t” and “Blur,” along with more than 60 million views for the band’s TikTok clips. They have also recently completed their largest headline run to date across North America and the United Kingdom.
