MGK Turned the Milan Runway Up to Neon
Okay, MGK. We see you.
That orange was not going to disappear into anybody’s camera roll. At Vogue World: Milano on September 22, MGK walked out in Byblos with Camper shoes, and we immediately had something to talk about besides the front row.
Look at the outfit in the runway photograph: the silver-gray strips running down the legs, the oversized pockets, the belt pulled across the waist. There is a wonderfully ridiculous collision of utility clothing and rock-star jewelry happening here. He looks ready to repair the spaceship, then headline the party inside it.
Orange, ink and absolutely no camouflage
For us, the strongest part is the contrast. Bright fabric against his dark tattoos. Slicked-back blond hair above that open neckline. Chains, earrings and bracelets interrupting all those practical-looking details. Even the heavy dark shoes help: they give the orange something to land on.
The jumpsuit has enough going on without an elaborate pose. Sleeves pushed up, hands down, straight ahead. We like that. Let us actually see the clothes.
Vogue’s reporting places the appearance in the show’s fourth act, “The Age of Intelligence.” MGK followed Alex Consani, whose pink Bottega Veneta look offered a very different kind of brightness. Two colors with no intention of behaving quietly.
A little nerve goes a long way
We are not suggesting everyone needs an orange jumpsuit by Friday. Although, if you already have one, please carry on.
What we love is seeing a musician make an outfit feel connected to the person wearing it. You can recognize MGK through all that color. The tattoos and jewelry aren’t hidden to make the fashion work; they are part of why this particular look works for us.
Would we change a thing? We would happily leave the cigarette out of the picture. The clothes are doing plenty on their own.
Take a closer look, then tell us: is it the orange, the silver detailing or the attitude that gets you first?
