Chicano Batman’s Notebook Fantasy Makes a Case for Keeping the Small Ideas
A voice memo can look very unimpressive sitting on a phone. Until it becomes the beginning of a song.
In ATO’s account of Chicano Batman’s Notebook Fantasy, “Parallels” grew from Eduardo Arenas playing his young son’s out-of-tune guitar and recording an idea. The album’s title, meanwhile, reaches toward the imaginative world of a teenage notebook. We love those details because they put creativity somewhere you can actually reach it.
Notebook Fantasy was released March 29, 2024, and produced by John Congleton. The official announcement introduced “Fly” as an early doorway into the record. This is a catalog spotlight, not a reunion or tour announcement.
Our earlier “Dark Star” coverage followed a different moment in the band’s work. Coming back through the making of Notebook Fantasy gives us a different angle: the value of a stray idea before anybody knows whether it is valuable.
You do not need a professional studio to understand that pleasure. Keep the scribble. Save the little rhythm. Pick up the imperfect instrument. Not everything has to turn into a masterpiece to make the day more interesting.
And if you need a soundtrack while you do it, there is a whole notebook here to open.
