Automatic: A Little Los Angeles Electricity for Your Evening
Los Angeles has never suffered from a shortage of people with interesting ideas and somewhere noisy to try them. Automatic are a very good reason to keep looking beyond the obvious names.
The band came together around the city’s DIY scene in 2017, according to Stones Throw. Signal arrived in 2019, followed by Excess in 2022. Their catalog now includes Is It Now?, made with producer Loren Humphrey.
That is a manageable amount of exploring. Three records, plenty of room to notice the changes, and no need to pretend you discovered them before everybody else.
For a quick introduction, start with the official “Is It Now?” video. Then browse the label’s video collection, including “Turn Away,” directed by Ambar Navarro. We like giving the people behind the camera their names back; a memorable visual does not make itself.
Stones Throw also lists October dates in Salt Lake City, Boise and Seattle. If you are nearby, follow the official schedule for the current details. For the rest of us, the videos are already waiting.
This is the side of new-wave discovery we want more of around here: a real band, a specific visual identity, and music you can follow straight from the article. Have a look. Your evening could use something other than the same five suggestions.
