H.E.R. Has the Guitar. Give Her Your Attention.
The sunglasses are recognizable. The initials are familiar. But how well do you know the musician holding the guitar?
H.E.R. is worth getting properly acquainted with, especially if you have only met her through a stray single. Start with “Hard Place” and her 2019 Grammy performance. There is a clear Stratocaster in that appearance—literally clear, not a trick of the lighting.
Fender credits Scott Buehl with building it and Carlos Lopez with the custom wiring. It is a fabulous-looking instrument, and a useful reminder to pay attention to the hands as well as the face.
Her official site leads to “Damage,” I Used to Know Her, the self-titled H.E.R. collection and Back of My Mind. “Bloody Waters,” with KAYTRANADA and Thundercat, is another connection for readers who already follow those two.
We would start small: one performance, then one record. You do not need to turn an artist into homework to get beyond the obvious song. Sometimes the next track you click is the one that finally makes the name mean something personal.
The official photograph above puts the instrument right beside the fashion. Good. Both belong in the picture, but we are especially interested in the person making the music.
