Altın Gün: Follow the Groove Back to Its Roots
Follow an Altın Gün track backward and you may find another artist, another recording, and an evening disappearing very pleasantly into musical history.
For an introduction, try Aşk, the Amsterdam-based band’s 2023 album. Glitterbeat’s account describes a return to the Anatolian folk-rock approach of their early records after the more electronic directions of Yol and Âlem.
The recording method changed with it. Bassist Jasper Verhulst describes musicians creating together in a rehearsal room and using a more traditional rock-recording setup, including tape. The intention was to capture more of the group’s live interaction.
Begin with “Rakıya Su Katamam,” “Güzelliğin On Para Etmez” and “Leylim Ley.” Then read the songwriting credits and follow the earlier artists and traditions they identify. A familiar melody can carry a substantial history before arriving in a new arrangement.
That history is part of the attraction. A listener can enjoy the present-day band while also giving attention to the people whose songs and musical language make the interpretation possible. The path runs in both directions.
The artwork offers its own invitation: a bright, graphic landscape with the title tucked into the corner. Open the sleeve, open the credits, and leave enough time for a few unexpected stops.
