Can One Pound From a Stadium Ticket Help Save Grassroots Music?

The distance between a packed stadium and a musician trying to afford the van can feel enormous. A new funding program is attempting to shorten it by one pound at a time.

Help Musicians has launched Fast Track Live, offering grants from £500 to £1,000 to eligible UK musicians pursuing a meaningful live opportunity. The program can support tours, festivals, showcases, support slots, launch shows and other performances capable of moving an artist’s career forward.

Funding can cover the stubbornly unglamorous machinery behind a good night: travel, accommodation, rehearsal space, equipment, production, crew costs, session musicians, merchandise and event-specific promotion. Successful applicants also receive a two-hour career clinic with a live-music specialist.

The program is delivered with support from LIVE Trust. Its funding includes a £1 contribution from tickets sold by participating arena and stadium tours above 5,000 capacity, along with larger outdoor events and festivals.

That creates a satisfying circuit. A listener entering a giant venue helps place a small amount of fuel into the tank of somebody trying to reach the next room. It will not solve every structural problem facing independent music, but it gives the industry’s biggest nights a practical way to feed its roots.

Applicants must be UK residents aged 18 or older, perform original music and meet the program’s income, savings and career-control requirements. The first round runs from September 7 through October 9 at 5 p.m.; a second is scheduled for October 19 through November 20.
