From the Inbox: The Static Dive Opens the Studio Door on “Mongo Fogo”
FROM THE INBOX — A weekend discovery selected from music sent to Bubbling Box.
A little room for instruments to do the talking feels right for Sunday. “Mongo Fogo,” from The Static Dive, arrived in our inbox with a promise of instrumental jazz, blues guitar, keys and African percussion. Behind the project is multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer Bob Smith, who also opens the studio door to show how his music comes together.
On his official release page, Smith identifies “Mongo Fogo” as a preview of the forthcoming Samsara Blues album. His accompanying studio journal offers another point of entry: the piece began with the udu, a clay percussion instrument, before he built out the arrangement with additional parts.
The process is the hook for us here at the Box. In his behind-the-scenes account, Smith describes composing short instrumental performances through improvisation—finding the next idea by playing, rather than mapping everything out first. There is something inviting about following a musician while the paint is still wet.
This is a quieter kind of discovery than a giant release-week spectacle: an independent musician developing a body of work and letting listeners see the hands behind it.
