Magdalena Bay’s Imaginal Disk Still Looks Like Nothing Else in the Room
There is a silver disc going into somebody’s forehead. That should probably be alarming. On the cover of Magdalena Bay’s Imaginal Disk, it is an excellent reason to stop scrolling.
The blue background, the blurred hand, the upward glance—it looks like a memory of a science-fiction film that may not actually exist. We love when album artwork gives us something stranger than a neatly posed photograph.
Released in 2024, Imaginal Disk has its own official visual world, with routes to “Death & Romance,” “Image” and “That’s My Floor.” This is one to explore with the screen on.
For our readers who love imaginative pop videos, here is a proper evening’s detour. Start with “Image,” then follow the other titles through the official site. Look at the characters, the colors and the objects that carry from one piece into another. A record can leave a visual impression before you have learned a single song title.
That is a large part of what first pulled us toward writing about music. Somebody makes something unusual, we want to know how it fits together, and suddenly we are sharing it with everyone willing to look.
Magdalena Bay do not need us to dress this artwork up with another layer of graphics. The imagination is already there.
Enter the official Imaginal Disk site. Preferably on a screen larger than the one you are checking while waiting for the microwave.
