Surprise Chef Put the Timpani in the Bathroom on Superb
Put the timpani in the bathroom. This is apparently a recording suggestion, and Surprise Chef have the story to support it.
When we covered the band in 2023, the focus was a run of instrumental EPs. This time we’re following Superb and a different question: what changes when meticulous musicians decide to leave more room for spontaneity?
Big Crown’s account of the album describes a looser writing and recording process. For “Body Slam,” the band placed a timpani in a bathroom two doors from the mixing board, using the space as part of the sound. An unconventional room assignment can earn its keep.
The label also points to “Bully Ball” and “Fare Evader” as examples of the record’s experimental approach. Those two tracks, alongside “Body Slam,” make a useful three-song route through the project.
The attraction is the practical curiosity behind the music. A band can spend years refining its technique and then use that confidence to try something less predictable. Knowing what you’re doing gives you more ways to play with the rules.
That makes Superb a worthwhile return visit. New record, new process, and a bathroom finally receiving proper recognition for its contribution to the arts.
