A public park is a good name for a record. Somewhere to arrive without a complicated plan, take a few turns, and notice who else is there.

Svaneborg Kardyb’s Superkilen, released in October 2024 on Gondwana, takes its title from the park in Copenhagen’s Nørrebro district. In their album notes, the duo connect that shared urban space with the room they want to create in their music.

The players are Nikolaj Svaneborg on Wurlitzer, Juno and piano, and Jonas Kardyb on drums and percussion. Their stated influences include Danish folk music and Scandinavian jazz, with Jan Johansson and Esbjörn Svensson among the reference points.

That compact setup gives the listener something useful to follow. Notice how a keyboard phrase develops, where percussion answers it, and how the balance changes when one player leaves a little space. You can be curious about those details without bringing a theory textbook.

Take the title track, “Cycles” and “St. Pancras” as an introduction, or use Gondwana’s official full-album video for the complete sequence.

The park connection makes a pleasing starting thought, but the musicians have given us a whole record to explore beyond the explanation. Find a comfortable spot and let the two of them get on with it.
