Thundercat Turned The Plaza Live Into Beautiful Chaos

A packed room, a band with astonishing instincts, and a crowd ready to go wherever the night took them.

The drummer had us at the disco-ball helmet. Then he started playing, and we had considerably more to discuss.

The Plaza Live in Orlando was packed for Thundercat, with fans in full costume and enough enthusiasm to make the room feel electric. People had arrived ready to participate. Looking around, we felt surrounded by people who wanted this night every bit as much as we did.

Before that beautiful chaos, Kitty Ca$h had the room moving in her own way. Her opening set was fantastic: upbeat, high-energy mixing that thrilled the crowd. Headphones on and hands busy across the decks, she gave us a proper reason to arrive early. We love an opener who makes the beginning of the night part of the memory.

We were already having ourselves a very good evening. Then came Thundercat, that gold bass and a band ready to take things considerably further.

Off the rails. Repeatedly. Beautiful chaos, to put it mildly.

We were blown away by the technical ability onstage. The playing could get wonderfully wild, yet the musicians kept finding one another inside it. Watching those exchanges was half the pleasure: the sense that someone could push an idea further, and the others would be right there with them. We kept looking from player to player, trying to take it all in.

Back to that drummer. The helmet was a magnificent introduction; the stick work secured our affection. We could have spent an unreasonable amount of the evening watching him alone. With so much happening across the stage, choosing where to look became its own small problem.

The vocalists were perfectly in sync, watching the crowd and responding on cue as the performance unfolded. Their connection gave us another reason to keep our eyes moving. This was a band worth watching closely, even when the temptation was to give ourselves over to the whole glorious racket.

Thundercat, the band and the audience had something special going between them. To us, it felt like everyone was on equal ground. The musicians brought all that extraordinary ability; the crowd brought costumes, enthusiasm and a willingness to follow. Together, it made the room feel wonderfully alive.

Kudos to The Plaza Live for bringing this kind of night to Orlando. Having a place here where adventurous musicians and such enthusiastic fans can come together means a great deal to us. Thank you to the venue and the people behind the evening—we want plenty more reasons to come back.

We went home with more than admiration for the playing. We had the feeling of having helped make a memory alongside everyone else there. A lifetime experience, disguised as a regular concert night out. With a disco-ball helmet, naturally.
