Tory Smith Finds 77 Different Lives Inside a Column of Clay

Give 77 artists the same piece of clay and you may get 77 different answers. Philadelphia-area sculptor Tory Smith is testing that idea by herself, one figure at a time.

Smith is a figurative ceramic artist working with different clay bodies, finishes and firing methods. Her figures do not chase polished perfection. They stretch, lean, gather tension and hold expressions that seem to change depending on where the viewer is standing.

The Rule That Creates Freedom

Project 77 begins with one disciplined rule: every sculpture starts as a twisted column of clay. From that shared beginning, Smith builds a completely individual figure. The limitation becomes a launchpad. One form appears guarded, another playful, another caught halfway between standing tall and folding inward.

It is a smart experiment because people work much the same way. We share the same basic materials, but pressure, heat, time and experience leave every person with a different surface.

Smith’s practice is also rooted in community. At the Cheltenham Center for the Arts she works as a member, instructor and kiln technician. That mix of making, teaching and maintaining the tools of the studio keeps her close to the complete life of clay—from the first touch to the final firing.

Our Take

These sculptures have the presence of a crowd without losing their individuality. There is no costume department and no unnecessary decoration. Gesture does the talking.

Project 77 makes us want to see the figures together, like a silent family reunion where every personality entered the room early. Smith proves that repetition does not have to flatten creativity. Sometimes the clearest rule gives an artist the most room to move.
