Yukimi Steps Forward With For You
A solo debut can arrive after a great deal of music. Yukimi had already built an extraordinary creative life as Little Dragon’s vocalist before releasing For You in March 2025.
The new space let her choose a more personal focus. Ninja Tune’s account of the album describes songs shaped by love, loss and resilience, with jazz, soul, electronic pop and other influences moving through the project.
“Break Me Down” makes a useful first stop. Yukimi wrote it with Little Dragon’s Erik Bodin and Lianne La Havas; Bodin produced and played drums, bass and keys, with La Havas on guitar. The credits show a solo direction taking form through trusted creative company.
Then try “Sad Makeup” and “Winter Is Not Dead.” Yukimi’s explanations give both songs an accessible starting point: the difficulty of containing sadness, and the life continuing beneath a Scandinavian winter. There is plenty to recognize in those ideas without pretending that everyone experiences them in the same way.
The video for “Break Me Down,” directed by Fredrik Egerstrand, adds a film connection: its seaside setting and staging pay tribute to Ingmar Bergman’s The Seventh Seal.
Follow the song into the visual, then return to the album. One artist, several ways of expressing the same creative moment. That deserves a little room of its own.
