Fat Dog Have More Than One Setting
Fat Dog have called their second album Cancel Me (I’m Tired). A modest title from a band clearly determined to make everyone’s filing system awkward.
The record arrived on October 2, following WOOF. In Domino’s announcement, frontman and songwriter Joe Love describes wanting this chapter to be less relentlessly intense. The resulting changes in pace are the useful story to follow.
The single “Heart of Darkness” provides a starting point. The label presents it as an example of that broader dynamic range, with a relationship narrative and the band’s humor still present. Ralph Fuller directed the accompanying video.
That combination makes this a more interesting introduction than simply asking how loudly the band can introduce itself. What happens when a group associated with an all-in approach begins deciding where to pull back? A change in scale can make the next burst of activity matter differently.
Begin with the single, then hear it in the album sequence. Return to WOOF. afterward if you want to compare the choices across the two records. The band has supplied a clear creative intention; the listening can test how it takes shape.
We’re interested in artists giving themselves another setting on the dial. They can keep the strange ideas and still make room for a breath. That is a promising reason to investigate this chapter of Fat Dog.
