Meet RÓIS Before MO LÉAN Reaches a Wider World — official release artwork.

A record can carry older voices into a new setting without smoothing away the history. RÓIS gives us a compelling place to begin exploring that possibility.

The Fermanagh-born, Dublin-based composer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist has signed to Domino, which will release a remastered version of her 2024 album MO LÉAN worldwide on November 20.

The label’s account connects the work with Irish-language singing and caoineadh, the tradition of keening associated with mourning. RÓIS places those materials in compositions that also draw on electronics and her broader musical interests. The history deserves care and specificity as we discover the work.

Her background helps explain the connections. She grew up among traditional musicians, played in a wedding and funeral band with her sister, studied composition, and developed interests extending into techno and jazz. Those experiences give the project several musical starting points.

The announcement links an earlier performance of “CAOINE,” offering a public introduction before the remastered album arrives. Begin there, then follow the information accompanying MO LÉAN rather than expecting a brief genre label to explain everything.

We’re interested in the decisions that let inherited forms keep moving. November brings a wider release; the chance to meet RÓIS and the traditions she is working with is already here.
