From the Inbox: Maya Engen Deals a Soulful Hand on Just My Luck
Sometimes the inbox deals us a name worth making room for. Today, we’re opening the door to New York singer-songwriter Maya Engen and her debut EP, Just My Luck.
Released July 10 through Giant Music, the six-track collection introduces an artist whose publicist describes a meeting point between soulful pop, jazz influence and a little country grit. Classical training sits behind that introduction, with Etta James, Miley Cyrus and RAYE among the influences named in her press materials. That is an inviting set of ingredients for a first chapter.
A friendship at the heart of “Vinyl”
The story behind focus track “Vinyl” gives us a particularly warm way into Engen’s world. In the release announcement, she explains that it was written about her best friend: someone magnetic and difficult for others to read, but deeply familiar to her. We love that starting point. Not every love song needs a romance at its center; sometimes the person who understands your beautiful chaos is the whole story.
The EP brings together “Fool,” “Jade,” “Vinyl,” “Midnight Blue,” “Mercury” and “Spend My Love.” Her team also points to early attention from Ones To Watch, Atwood Magazine and Spotify’s Fresh Finds ecosystem—encouraging signs for a developing voice.
