From the Inbox: Ruby Alexander Finds a Song in the Things Left Unsaid
The conversation ends. Your mind, unfortunately, has other plans.
Ruby Alexander’s “Undertow” follows that familiar mess of feelings after a final goodbye. The Australian folk-soul artist’s September 23 single reached us through Gabby Reese at Coffee Talk Media, and the story behind its making caught our attention.
According to the supplied recording notes, Alexander began with a classical-guitar piece in 2023. Later, the emotional aftermath of a relationship gave that earlier idea a new purpose. We love that detail. Something unfinished can be waiting for the right words, rather than waiting to be thrown away.
John Davis recorded the guitar at The Bunker Studio in Brooklyn and contributed double bass. Drake Hunt worked with Alexander on the vocals and co-production. The release notes say the guitar and vocal performances were captured in complete takes—an appealing choice for a song built around such a personal conversation.
The blue-and-white cover keeps things close: a softly rendered portrait, rough edges, almost the feeling of a page you have held onto. No enormous slogan required.
Listen to “Undertow” here, then look for July’s “All This Time Together.” Alexander’s team also has an EP penciled in for November; we will share the title and exact date when those details are announced.
For now, meet Ruby. A small idea from three years ago has found its way out into the world, and we are glad somebody kept it.
