Agnes Obel Returns With The Meaning of Flowers—and a Whole New Beginning

There are records we reach for to escape our lives, and others that invite us to look at those lives a little more closely. Agnes Obel’s new project arrives with a very personal reason to lean in.
Released September 18, The Meaning of Flowers is her first studio album since 2020’s Myopia. Across 12 tracks, the Danish artist explores a changed relationship with the world following pregnancy and motherhood. She wrote, recorded, arranged and produced the album in her Berlin studio, and dedicated it to her daughter. Those details come from Deutsche Grammophon’s release announcement.
“My daughter’s presence and energy colour everything on this album,” Obel says in the announcement. That is a lovely doorway into a project concerned with connection, growth and transformation: a new life changing the way an artist understands her own.
Around here, that catches our attention. Music became part of our family’s daily language long before we had a tidy explanation for why we needed it. An artist approaching that connection from her own experience gives us something worth exploring—not just another release date to scroll past.
This is our invitation to discover the record, rather than a full listening verdict. We want to give it the time a proper review deserves. For now, the appeal is a deeply personal creative starting point and an artist carrying her vision from the writing through to the finished recording.
Put the phone down for a little while, find a comfortable corner, and meet The Meaning of Flowers here. Keep an eye on Bubbling Box for a closer listen.
