Wu-Tang Forever Was Never a Small Idea
That yellow W has done some traveling. Record sleeves, bedroom walls, T-shirts, entire crowds. Very few groups get to turn one letter into a shared language.
Wu-Tang Clan’s Final Chamber tour has us thinking about how much music sits behind the symbol. Start with Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), then try to keep the listening contained to one album. Good luck with that.
RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ghostface Killah, Inspectah Deck, U-God, Masta Killa and the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard brought sharply different personalities into the same group. That contrast is the attraction. You can have a favorite voice without wanting any of the others removed from the conversation.
The solo records make the picture bigger: Liquid Swords, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…, Ironman and Tical are places to begin, not boxes to tick. Pick the MC who catches your ear and follow that thread.
The photograph above comes from the band’s official tour page. The stage is crowded, the lights are blazing, and the audience looks like it could carry the chorus without any assistance. That is the scale of the connection we want to celebrate.
We are not ready to put Wu-Tang behind glass. Keep the records in rotation. Read the credits. Introduce someone to a track they have somehow missed. A great group gives you more than a single memory to hold on to.
Follow the official tour page for current dates and updates.
