Davana Robedee Lets Indigo Do the Drawing

Davana Robedee does not simply draw an image onto fabric. She sets the conditions, folds labor into the material and lets indigo finish the conversation.

The Syracuse-based artist, curator and educator creates large-scale fiber installations and indigo drawings using stitch-resist shibori. Some of the dye begins in her own small garden. Earth grows the plant, water carries the color and air completes the chemical change when the cloth leaves the vat. The finished image is part drawing and part weather event.

Robedee’s process leaves room for uncertainty. She creates boundaries and resistance points, but the dye decides how it will travel through the fabric. That balance gives the work a dream-state quality: controlled enough to hold a thought, unpredictable enough to feel alive.

Her interest in lucid dreams, visual auras and the slippery border between consciousness and the unconscious gives the material another layer. Cloth becomes more than a surface. It feels like a membrane between what we can touch and what the mind invents after the lights go down.

There is community inside the practice as well. Robedee directs the Tyler Art Gallery at SUNY Oswego and has worked to support the networks surrounding fiber art. She brings the hand of an artist and the instincts of a builder—someone making work while helping create room for other people to make theirs.

Our Take

We are drawn to the patience of this work. Nothing here feels rushed or factory-clean. The color has history before it reaches the fabric, and the fabric has a memory after it leaves the vat.

Robedee turns a familiar blue into something mysterious. Indigo does not sit quietly in these pieces. It blooms, interrupts and sometimes looks like it arrived from a place halfway between a garden and a dream.
